My Village Story
My Village, Bolpur, is a quaint settlement with a population of only two hundred residents. Situated approximately 150 kilometers away from Kolkata, the main city, I have the opportunity to visit this charming place once a year during my Dussehra vacation. Accompanied by my parents, we make our way to our ancestral house, where the grand Durga Puja celebration takes place annually.
As our car turns onto the muddy road leading to the village, a sense of freshness permeates the air. Towering trees line both sides of the road, seemingly brimming with life, as if they are joyfully dancing to greet our arrival. This enchanting sight leaves me in awe; I have never witnessed such a breathtaking scene before.
Upon reaching the village entrance, a temple stands tall, witnessing the constant flow of prayers, rituals, and worship activities. A serene, big pond adorns the vicinity of the temple, encircled by mango trees, champak trees, and a majestic Peepal tree. The sweet fragrance of flowers and budding mangoes captivates everyone’s attention, adding to the ambiance of tranquility.

I haven’t yet come across a village like mine. My hometown of Kanthalpara is a tiny, peaceful community that is completely surrounded by lush, green forests. It is located on the border of 24 Parganas in the south and Nadia in the north, distant from the busy turmoil of the city. While Bangaon is located to the east, the Ganga River’s tranquil flow adorns the village to the west.
Over 5,000 people live in Kanthalpara, which has a population that occupies an area of about 6 square kilometers. Out of every 100 people there, 60% are farmers who rely on farming and small-scale businesses for their income. The remainder of the population works in manufacturing and offices. Our village boasts a commendable Health Centre, ensuring the well-being of the community.
Education is easily accessible in Kanthalpara, which is one of its outstanding features. We are lucky in that we do not need to leave our village in order to attend school. Two primary schools and one high school are located within the boundaries of our village, respectively, offering educational possibilities to young brains.
Kanthalpara also provides for its residents’ needs in terms of water supply, with two sizable tanks and seven Tubewells. With a daily market and a police camp, the community is humming with activity. Our village is now a thriving trading hub as traders from all over come here to buy agricultural products.
Kanthalpara is well-equipped in terms of amenities, with a State Bank branch and a post office nearby. As the location of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s birth, it is significant historically, and our public library is proud to bear the renowned author’s name. Our community is located along National Highway 34, which connects Kanthalpara with Kolkata via land and water.
Kanthalpara preserves its simplicity and tranquillity in the midst of all these changes, radiating a sense of peace. Our village has everything a perfect community should be, making it a really unique place to live.
